Between 2018 and 2023, the market volume for beef, sheep, and goat fat in Western Asia expanded from 153 thousand tons to 186 thousand tons. This growth was consistent, with the market accelerating after 2020 and reaching its highest point in 2023.

The expansion was underpinned by a steady rise in domestic production, which increased from 127 thousand tons to 178 thousand tons over the period. At the same time, imports fell by more than a third, while exports grew sixfold, shifting the market structure toward greater self-sufficiency.

After a minor stabilization in 2022, the market resumed its upward trajectory in 2023, reflecting robust domestic output and stronger export activity.

The export market for beef, sheep, and goat fat in Western Asia showed an unstable trend over the observed period. Exports hit their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2019, with a 2.5-fold difference between these years. In 2020, exports totaled 1 883 t, representing a sharp decline of 42.5% year-over-year. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 3 276 t, which also saw the largest increase of 106.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, the leading destinations for beef, sheep, and goat fat exports from Western Asia were Pakistan, accounting for 43.0% of exports in kind, Italy with 14.5%, and Greece at 8.2%. Together, these three countries made up 65.7% of total export flows.

The export market in value terms displayed volatility during the period. Exports reached their lowest point in 2020 and peaked in 2018, with a two-fold gap between these years. In 2020, export value amounted to 816 K $ US, a decrease of 44.1% compared to the previous year. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 1 600 K $ US, which also experienced the largest increase of 87.4%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Pakistan, Italy, and Greece consistently led as the top destinations for beef, sheep, and goat fat exports from Western Asia in value terms. Pakistan accounted for 28.3% of exports, Italy for 24.5%, and Greece for 6.4%, collectively representing 59.2% of total export flows.

In 2020, imports were recorded at 24 745 t, reflecting a modest drop of 4.5% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 8%, equivalent to an annualized decline of 2.8%. The highest import volume was in 2018 at 27 486 t, while the largest decline occurred in 2019 at 5.7%. The largest increase was recorded in 2018 at 2.2%.

The lowest value was in 2019 at 22 882 K $ US, with the largest decline occurring in 2018 at 14.7%.
