Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for beef, sheep, and goat fat in Syria declined from 19.7 thousand tons in 2018 to 18.0 thousand tons in 2019, following a sharp reduction in livestock numbers due to war and smuggling, which decreased cattle herds by 55% and sheep and goat flocks by 60%. The government responded by importing 8,000 cows from Germany to renew the herd and allowed the private sector to import vaccines, laying the groundwork for recovery.

From 2020 onward, the market expanded, reaching 22.9 thousand tons in 2020 and 25.1 thousand tons in 2021. This growth was bolstered by free vaccination campaigns that covered approximately 600,000 head of livestock in the first half of 2021, as well as the expansion of feed cycles to ensure animal nutrition. In 2022, market volume increased to 29.6 thousand tons due to development projects, the setting of preferential prices for agricultural diesel, and improved access to feed.

By 2023, the market grew to 31.3 thousand tons, driven by the implementation of the 2030 Strategy, which included vaccine imports, the establishment of an epidemiological database, and support for local production. In 2024, biosecurity measures (Decision No. 56) were introduced, new feed cycles were opened, and over 6 million doses of preventive vaccination were administered, further strengthening the sector.
