Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the market volume for beef, sheep, and goat fats in Czechia contracted from 13 150 tonnes to 9 931 tonnes. This decline coincided with a structural shift in livestock farming, including the export of fattened bulls for slaughter abroad, which diverted potential fat sources from the domestic market, and a continued concentration of animal production into larger corporate entities.

The market rebounded to 11 863 tonnes in 2021 but fell again to 8 964 tonnes in 2022. During this period, regulatory changes such as the new Veterinary Act unifying EU animal health rules and the removal of transport cleaning approval requirements aimed to streamline sector operations, yet overall volume remained volatile.

A sharp drop to 5 801 tonnes in 2023 was primarily driven by the Czech Republic obtaining negligible risk status for classical scrapie (TSE), which facilitated easier export of sheep and goats within the EU and led to a surge in outbound shipments. In 2024, the market recovered to 6 218 tonnes, supported by increased beef imports, a slight reduction in exports, and a shift in consumer preferences toward beef products following African swine fever outbreaks in the pig sector.
