Earlier Report Observations

The market for beef, sheep, and goat fat in Israel expanded from 12 196 tons in 2018 to 15 871 tons in 2019. This growth occurred alongside a 36% increase in live sheep and calf imports during the first half of 2018 and a government plan to raise duty-free chilled meat imports to over 21 000 tons by 2020.

Market volume contracted to 13 129 tons in 2020 and fell further to 6 183 tons in 2022. In 2020, the State Comptroller viewed positively the removal of restrictions on cattle and meat imports. In 2022, authorities approved a long-haul shipment of about 16 000 sheep and cattle from Australia and did not enact animal welfare regulations for slaughterhouses.

The market recovered to 7 927 tons in 2023, a year when per-capita beef consumption reached 17.7 kg, above the OECD average, and overall food consumption rose sharply. For 2024, new dairy product launches using sheep, goat, and cow milk were introduced, and live animal shipments were expected to cease following the earlier duty-free import quota plan.
