Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2019, production of beef, sheep, and goat fat in India increased, supported by the launch of the National Animal Disease Control Programme. This initiative improved livestock health and tallow yields, while state-level cow-slaughter bans shifted processing focus toward buffalo fat without halting overall output growth.

The COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020 disrupted animal-feed supply chains, reducing cattle growth rates and causing a sharp contraction in production and market volume. A strong recovery followed in 2021, driven by the National Action Plan for Egg and Poultry, which boosted demand for animal fat as a feed ingredient, alongside continued disease-control measures that stabilized raw material supply.

Production growth continued through 2022 and 2023, fueled by a 9.8% rise in cattle numbers reported in the Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics and increased buffalo slaughter for export. This export-oriented expansion, supported by APEDA's traceability requirements for overseas markets, led to a decline in domestic market volume in 2023 as more fat was shipped abroad.
