The market for fresh or chilled beans in Western Asia expanded to 825 thousand tonnes in 2019, but then entered a sustained decline, contracting to 697 thousand tonnes by 2023. This overall decrease of over 15% from the peak was driven primarily by a reduction in domestic production, which fell sharply over the same period.

While import and export volumes remained relatively minor, showing only slight annual variations, the downward trend in market size closely mirrored the drop in local output. The most pronounced market contraction occurred in 2021, when production fell by nearly 11%.

In 2024, the market environment was influenced by global supply chain disruptions and climate conditions affecting bean yields, which impacted pricing and availability. Concurrently, increasing consumer health consciousness and demand for plant-based proteins continued to shape demand dynamics for fresh beans in the region.

The export market for beans in kind from 2017 to 2020 was highly diversified. Japan accounted for 17.9% of exports, Germany for 4.0%, and Russia for 3.9%, together making up just 25.8% of total flows. The remaining 74.2% was distributed among numerous other countries.

Western Asia's bean exports declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 8,313 thousand US dollars, down 18.6% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports fell by 42.9%, corresponding to an average annual decrease of 17.0%.

The structure of bean exports in value terms from 2017 to 2020 indicates a diversified set of trading partners. Japan accounted for 42.0% of export value, Germany for 4.0%, and Russia for 2.5%, together comprising 48.5% of total flows. The remaining 51.5% was spread across numerous smaller markets.

In 2020, Western Asia imported 17,806 tonnes of beans, showing little change from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 33.5%, equivalent to an average annual growth rate of 10.1%. The highest volume was recorded in 2018 at 19,966 tonnes. The largest decline occurred in 2019 at 10.9%, while the biggest increase was in 2018 at 49.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Iran was the leading supplier of beans to Western Asia, accounting for 32.8% of imports in kind, followed by India at 13.9% and Egypt at 8.6%. Together, these three countries comprised 55.4% of total imports in kind.
