From 2018 to 2020, the fresh bean market in Polynesia grew steadily, with volume increasing from 31 696 kg to 37 322 kg. This expansion was primarily supported by the emphasis on family farming and the valorization of local terroirs, which encouraged domestic production of fresh beans. The introduction of the Polynesian Public Procurement Code in 2020 further structured demand from public institutions, contributing to market growth.

Market volume stabilized in 2021 at 37 311 kg amid broader economic adjustments, including circulars addressing raw material price volatility in public contracts. A sharp decline followed in 2022, with volume dropping to 30 519 kg, driven by a nationwide surge in food prices—31% higher than in mainland France—which dampened consumer demand, alongside the enactment of price caps on essential goods under the Loi du Pays n° 2022‑44.

The contraction continued into 2023, with market volume falling to 25 179 kg. This was exacerbated by stricter phytosanitary requirements for imported fresh vegetables, mandating certificates and drastically reducing bean imports. Concurrent price regulation updates under Arrêté n° 489 CM and the establishment of the Strategic Agricultural Development Committee (COSDA) aimed to stabilize the local agricultural sector amid these challenges.

Beans production in Polynesia has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, Polynesia produced 36.0 t of beans, representing a modest 9.1% increase over the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 10.4%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.4%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 29.0 t, which also saw the largest decline of 11.1%. The most significant increase occurred in 2019, with a rise of 13.8%.
