Earlier Report Observations
The Kenyan fresh beans market experienced considerable volume fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. After an initial 31,273 tons in 2018, the market contracted to 27,863 tons in 2019 before recovering to 31,412 tons in 2020. A sharp decline to 26,465 tons occurred in 2021, with volume stabilizing near 26,000 tons in 2022.
Market volume rose to 28,809 tons in 2023. This growth coincided with the entry of new bean varieties such as Amy and Teresa, which expanded production options for farmers. Additionally, stricter EU import controls requiring inspections on 10% of Kenyan fresh bean consignments increased export compliance costs, contributing to a reduction in exports and greater domestic availability. Shifting consumer preference toward fresh beans over dried varieties further supported local demand.
Regulatory changes in 2024 included amendments to The Crops Regulations and the passage of the Mung Beans Bill, which introduced licensing for large-scale mung bean trading and processing. Continued enforcement of pesticide bans, including acephate, and ongoing EU market access requirements shaped the operating environment for the sector.
