The barytes market volume in MENA showed significant movements from 2018 to 2022. After starting at 1 127 K t in 2018, it edged down to 1 086 K t in 2019 before surging to 1 638 K t in 2020.

A sharp contraction to 872 K t occurred in 2021, but the market rebounded to 1 384 K t in 2022, indicating a recovery phase. These shifts reflected varying levels of industrial activity and supply chain conditions.

From 2023 onward, market dynamics have been influenced by rising demand from key consuming sectors such as oil and gas exploration and construction, which supported consumption growth in the region.

However, by 2020, production had fallen sharply to 827 thousand tons, representing a 40.0% decrease compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production decreased by 25.3%, which translates to an annualized decline rate of 9.3%.

Barytes production in the MENA region saw two years of growth before entering a downturn. In 2019, production value peaked at 168.3 million US dollars, reflecting a 17.4% increase from the prior year. By 2020, however, the value had dropped to 96.3 million US dollars, a decline of 42.8% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production value fell by 26%, equivalent to an annualized decrease of 9.5%.

Barytes exports from the MENA region expanded for two years before reversing course. In 2019, exports reached their highest level at 1,012 thousand tons, with a 9.0% increase from the previous year. However, by 2020, exports had plummeted to 397 thousand tons, a sharp decline of 60.8% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 56.5%, which corresponds to an annualized drop of 24.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, the geographical distribution of barytes exports from MENA was highly diversified. The top three destinations—the United States (31.0% of exports in kind), the Netherlands (10.9%), and Argentina (6.0%)—collectively accounted for 47.9% of total export flows. The remaining 52.1% was spread across numerous smaller partner countries.

Over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 56.9%, equating to an annualized decline of 24.5%.

By 2020, imports had surged to 1,208 thousand tons, an increase of 68.2% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 15.9%, which translates to an annualized decline of 5.6%.
