"Western Africa" region includes following countries:
Earlier Report Observations
The West African banana market expanded consistently from 2018 to 2021, with volume growing from 4 997 thousand tons to 8 633 thousand tons. This growth was primarily driven by rapid urbanization in the region, which significantly increased commercial demand for bananas in urban areas. Additionally, the end of a seven-year drought in Mozambique in 2021 improved regional production conditions, contributing to the sharp volume increase that year.
After reaching a high of 8 633 thousand tons in 2021, the market volume contracted to 7 639 thousand tons by 2023. This decline was partly due to prolonged droughts affecting production, increased costs for agricultural inputs, and ongoing logistical disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic, which strained supply. Meanwhile, some African producers diversified their export destinations, shipping bananas to markets in Asia such as Japan and South Korea.
