Earlier Report Observations

Morocco's banana market volume expanded to 371 000 tonnes in 2019, driven by a 4.9% increase in domestic production. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 then disrupted national cultivation and supply chains, leading to a slight contraction in the market to 363 500 tonnes.

From 2021 to 2023, the market entered a sustained decline, falling to 337 000 tonnes. Severe drought and reduced planting areas cut local output by 7.5% in 2023, while producers sold at a loss and called for safeguard measures against imports. Regulatory changes, including the January 2022 AGEC law requiring stickers on loose bananas, added further pressure on the sector.

In 2024, banana imports hit a record 36 000 tonnes, a 28.8% jump from 2023, filling seasonal gaps in local supply. This surge highlighted Morocco's growing reliance on foreign bananas despite its significant homegrown production.
