The Slovenian market for fresh aubergines expanded to a peak of 1 067 t in 2019, before entering a phase of contraction. This growth was supported by a simultaneous increase in domestic output, which rose from 330 t to 550 t over 2018-2020, contributing to overall supply. By 2022, the total market volume had contracted significantly to 725 t, a decline of over 30% from the 2019 high, as falling import volumes placed downward pressure on available supply.

The market's partial recovery to 866 t in 2023 was driven by a resurgence in imports, which rose by over 70 t compared to the previous year. This uptick in foreign supply helped offset the continued lower level of domestic production, which remained below 350 t. Export activity, which saw a notable spike in 2022, returned to more moderate levels, ensuring a greater share of production was retained for the domestic market during this period of recovery.

Slovenia's aubergine production increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 550.0 t of aubergines, marking a 10.0% rise compared to 2019.

The market showed an unstable trend over the period. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2020 at 57.0 t, which was 53.7% lower than the previous year. In contrast, the highest volume was registered in 2019 at 123.3 t, representing a peak-to-trough ratio of 2.2 times. The largest annual increase occurred in 2019, with exports growing by 108.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, the main buyers of Slovenian aubergines were Bosnia and Herzegovina (30.0% of exports in kind), Serbia (18.2%), and Croatia (18.0%). Together, these three countries accounted for 66.3% of total exports in kind.

After two years of growth, Slovenia's aubergine exports declined in 2020. Exports were recorded at 58.2 K $ US, a decrease of 48.3% compared to 2019. The highest value was in 2019 at 112.6 K $ US, with the largest annual increase that year at 20.5%. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports fell by 31.7%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 11.9%.

Slovenia's aubergine imports declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports reached 564.5 t, a significant drop of 18.2% from 2019. The highest volume was in 2018 at 742.3 t, with the largest annual increase that year at 1.6%. From 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 22.7%, corresponding to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Italy (41.7% of imports in kind), Spain (29.6%), and Austria (13.6%) remained the primary suppliers of aubergines to Slovenia. Together, they made up 85.0% of total imports in kind.
