During this period, import levels for fruits and vegetables remained substantial, while overall exports of fresh vegetables declined, which may have contributed to greater domestic availability of aubergines.

In 2024, the market environment was influenced by enhanced food safety inspections targeting fresh produce labeling and hygiene. Shifting consumer habits also played a role, as many Bulgarian shoppers sought cheaper alternatives by buying in neighboring Greece where prices were significantly lower, affecting retail flows and price dynamics for fresh vegetables including aubergines.

Bulgaria's aubergine production has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 9 920 tonnes of aubergines, marking a significant 11.3% decrease compared to the previous year. However, over the 2017-2020 period, export value fell by 20%, with an average annual decrease of 7.2%. The lowest point was in 2019 at 745 thousand US dollars, which also saw the sharpest drop of 13.7%.
