Earlier Report Observations

The Spanish market for artificial parts of the body grew from $436.9 million in 2018 to $442 million in 2019. However, in 2020, the market contracted to $377.2 million, primarily due to widespread healthcare disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed elective procedures and affected supply chains. A strong rebound followed in 2021, with the market size surging to $501.3 million as pent-up demand for medical devices and implants was addressed.

By 2023, the market value had moderated to $474.6 million, while domestic production was recorded at $41 million. Entering 2024, the market gained new momentum from the resumption of production and commercial implantations of the Aeson artificial heart by CARMAT. This event introduced a novel advanced product into the vital organs segment, directly stimulating activity in the European artificial organ market.

Long-term market expansion is underpinned by Spain's aging population and the rising prevalence of chronic diseases, which drive underlying demand. Furthermore, the ongoing implementation of the European Medical Device Regulation (MDR) establishes stricter safety and traceability requirements for implantable devices, shaping the commercial landscape. Initiatives like the creation of a regional oversight office for AI in healthcare and a controlled testing environment for high-risk AI applications are fostering a regulated framework for innovation in bionic implants and smart medical devices.
