The areca nut market began the period constrained by a severe drought in Karnataka and a government ban on endosulfan pesticide in 2018, which pressured production. However, by 2020, the area under cultivation in Karnataka had expanded by 21%, leading to a 39% surge in the state's production. This drove total Asian production to over 2.1 million tons and the market volume past 2 million tons in 2020, with imports also rising to meet growing demand from the pan masala and gutkha industries.

Strong demand from the pan masala sector continued to drive market growth through 2021 and 2022, with production peaking at nearly 2.5 million tons. During this period, high sales taxes on areca nuts led to widespread tax evasion and the emergence of a secondary sales market. The market size stabilized at around 2.4 million tons in 2022, supported by these consumption trends.

In 2023, production and market volume declined. This coincided with a government crackdown on areca nut smuggling to protect domestic farmers and the imposition of high tariff values. Concurrently, import policy was amended to allow fresh areca nut imports from Bhutan without a Minimum Import Price, facilitating trade. Regulatory scrutiny intensified, evidenced by Delhi High Court cases on the classification of roasted nuts. By 2024, the market was influenced by revised tariff values, continued demand from pan masala makers, and the adoption of precision farming techniques aimed at boosting long-term productivity.
