The global fresh produce industry also faced supply chain challenges from weather extremes and geopolitical tensions in 2023, which moderated the growth momentum.

By 2024, apple farming in Kenya had become highly profitable due to strong local and export demand, with new varieties like Wambugu apples gaining popularity for their yield. Improved irrigation techniques and support from initiatives like FarmKenya and the Fresh Produce Consortium of Kenya spurred a regional apple farming revolution, while shifting consumer preferences towards healthy eating further bolstered demand for these fruits.

After two consecutive years of decline, apple, pear, and quince production in Eastern Africa rebounded. In 2020, the region produced 25 477 tonnes, marking a modest 3.1% increase compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, overall production decreased by 4.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.4%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 24 718 tonnes, while the sharpest decline occurred in 2018 at 4.5%.

Exports apples, pears and quinces from Eastern Africa

The market showed considerable volatility throughout the period. Exports reached their lowest point in 2019 at 246 tonnes, while peaking in 2017, creating a 7.8-fold difference between these extremes. In 2020, Eastern Africa exported 549 tonnes of apples, pears, and quinces, representing a dramatic 123.3% surge from the previous year. The most significant decline occurred in 2018 at 85.6%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Belarus and the Democratic Republic of the Congo consistently dominated the export structure in volume terms, together accounting for 42.3% of total shipments.

Export values exhibited significant fluctuations during this timeframe. The lowest point came in 2018 at 344 thousand US dollars, while the highest was in 2017, creating a 5.6-fold variation between these years. In 2020, Eastern Africa's apple, pear, and quince exports reached 524 thousand US dollars, showing a 38.7% increase from 2019. The most substantial decline occurred in 2018 at 82.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Belarus (32.4% of export value), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (11.5%), and Bunkers (0.9%) remained the primary destinations for Eastern Africa's apple, pear, and quince exports, collectively representing 44.8% of total export value.

Following two years of contraction, apple, pear, and quince imports to Eastern Africa resumed growth. In 2020, imports reached 50 339 tonnes, reflecting a moderate 6.6% increase from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, total imports declined by 2.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 0.8%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 47 205 tonnes, while the most significant decrease occurred that same year at 5.2%.

Throughout 2017-2020, South Africa dominated the import structure in volume terms, accounting for 88.2% of total flows, with other markets playing a much smaller role.

In 2020, the region imported 43 137 thousand US dollars worth of these fruits, representing a slight 2.8% decrease from 2019.
