In value terms, the market more than doubled from $3.3 billion to $5.1 billion, indicating rising prices or a shift toward higher-value products.

In 2023, hail damage in major fruit-producing areas caused a lower pome fruit crop, reducing apple and pear production and exports. This decrease in supply led to a modest decline in market volume to 4.4 million tons, while the market value surged by 24% to $5.1 billion, partly due to limited availability and inelastic supply conditions noted in some markets.

Africa's production of apples, pears, and quinces has grown for the second year in a row. In 2020, the continent produced 4 078 thousand tonnes, marking a modest 3.8% increase from 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 3.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.1%. The lowest output was in 2018 at 3 698 thousand tonnes, which saw the largest decline of 6.4%. In contrast, 2019 recorded the biggest increase at 6.2%.

The value of apples, pears, and quinces production in Africa has increased for two consecutive years. In 2020, output was valued at 4 659 million US dollars, showing a modest 4.0% rise compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production value grew by 25.6%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 7.9%. The lowest value occurred in 2018 at 3 478 million US dollars, with the largest decline that year at 6.3%. The most significant increase was in 2019, at 28.8%.

Exports apples, pears and quinces from Africa

Exports in kind, K t

Following two years of decline, Africa's exports of apples, pears, and quinces rebounded in 2020. Exports totaled 527.9 thousand tonnes, a 6.8% gain from the previous year. However, over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 16.4%, with an average annual decline of 5.8%. The lowest export volume was in 2019 at 494.2 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest drop of 21.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, the export structure for apples, pears, and quinces remained highly diversified. The top three markets—the United Kingdom (14.5% of exports), the Netherlands (8.3%), and Russia (8.2%)—combined accounted for just 31.0% of total flows. The remaining 69.0% was distributed among a wide range of smaller markets.

After a two-year downturn, Africa's export value for apples, pears, and quinces increased in 2020. Exports reached 603.1 million US dollars, up 7.0% year-on-year. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 563.6 million US dollars, which experienced the largest decline of 4.7%.

An analysis of export values from 2017 to 2020 reveals a broad distribution across many markets. The United Kingdom (13.8% of exports), the Netherlands (8.6%), and Russia (7.7%) together made up only 30.1% of total flows, with the remaining 69.9% coming from various other partners.

In 2020, Africa's imports of apples, pears, and quinces stood at 519.2 thousand tonnes, a sharp 23.8% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports increased by 21.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 6.6%. The lowest import volume was in 2018 at 419.1 thousand tonnes, while the peak was in 2019 at 681.1 thousand tonnes, which saw the largest increase of 62.5%.

Between 2017 and 2020, imports of apples, pears, and quinces to Africa were spread across a wide range of markets. Italy (16.9% of imports), Poland (14.0%), and Greece (8.9%) together accounted for only 39.8% of total flows.

After two years of growth, Africa's import value for apples, pears, and quinces declined in 2020. Imports totaled 586.6 million US dollars, a 9.7% contraction from the year before. From 2017 to 2020, import value rose by 31.8%, with an average annual increase of 9.6%. The highest value was in 2019 at 650.0 million US dollars, which also recorded the largest rise of 43.2%.
