Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh apples in Ireland experienced significant fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. After reaching 115.7 thousand tons in 2018, market volume dropped sharply to 79.7 thousand tons the following year and remained near that level in 2020. A further decline to 62.6 thousand tons occurred in 2021, marking the lowest point in the period, before a recovery to 83.1 thousand tons in 2022. The market then contracted again to 71.0 thousand tons in 2023.

These movements were primarily driven by changes in import volumes, which account for the majority of supply. Imports fell from 100.4 thousand tons in 2018 to 63.6 thousand tons in 2019 and fluctuated between 49.3 and 65.7 thousand tons thereafter. Domestic apple production varied from 15.9 to 23.2 thousand tons, while exports remained modest, between 2.6 and 5.2 thousand tons. In 2024, import volumes rose to 57.9 thousand tons, with exports at 4.3 thousand tons.
