The National Action Plan for the Sustainable Use of Phytosanitary Products in 2022 stimulated demand for biodegradable surfactants in agriculture. Simultaneously, major companies launched new biosurfactants, and updates to chemical risk regulations favored specialized products, reducing physical volume to 80.4 thousand tons but increasing market value to $126.3 million. The revision of the European detergents regulation in 2023 mandated biodegradability for all surfactants, and the new CLP labeling rules in 2024 enhanced transparency, supporting sustainable production. By 2024, market volume recovered to 87.8 thousand tons, with value growing to $134.1 million.

In 2020, Spain's anionic surfactants output reached 118.1 million US dollars, marking a 5.7% increase compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production declined by 12.9%, with an average annual decrease of 4.5%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 111.7 million US dollars, while the peak occurred in 2018 at 146.7 million US dollars. The most significant drop took place in 2019, falling by 23.9%, whereas the largest rise was observed in 2018 with an 8.2% increase.

Following two years of decline, Spain's anionic surfactants production rebounded. In 2020, the country produced 111.4 thousand tonnes, representing a 10.4% year-over-year growth. Between 2017 and 2020, overall production decreased by 5.2%, translating to an average annual decline of 1.8%. The lowest output was recorded in 2019 at 100.9 thousand tonnes, which also saw the most substantial drop of 11.2%.

Spain's anionic surfactants exports grew for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 65 425 tonnes, remaining nearly unchanged from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 3.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.0%. The lowest export volume was in 2018 at 57 465 tonnes, which experienced the largest decline of 9.5%. In contrast, 2019 saw the most significant increase of 13.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Spain's anionic surfactants exports in volume terms were highly diversified. Algeria accounted for 18.1% of exports, France for 10.4%, and Morocco for 9.8%, together making up 38.3% of total flows. The remaining 61.7% was distributed among numerous smaller trading partners.

After two years of growth, Spain's anionic surfactants exports in value terms declined. In 2020, exports amounted to 88 917 thousand US dollars, down 7.8% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 5.5%, with an average annual decline of 1.9%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 96 490 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 2.2%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, imports increased by 28.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 8.7%. The peak import volume was in 2019 at 71 717 tonnes, which also experienced the largest increase of 19.9%.

Throughout 2017-2020, Portugal, Italy, and Germany formed the core group of suppliers for Spain's anionic surfactants imports in volume terms. Portugal accounted for 32.1% of imports, Italy for 26.4%, and Germany for 18.9%, together representing 77.4% of total flows.
