The Swedish market for aluminium bars, rods and profiles measured in volume terms peaked at 75 758 tons in 2021 before declining to 71 018 tons in 2022. In value terms, however, the market expanded consistently from $253.0 million in 2020 to $432.2 million in 2022, reflecting a substantial increase in unit prices or a shift toward higher-value products.

Domestic production rose markedly from 65 898 tons in 2020 to 85 635 tons in 2021, then eased to 82 221 tons in 2022. Export volumes jumped from 38 591 tons in 2020 to 57 305 tons in 2021 and remained elevated, indicating strong external demand. Import volumes, after reaching 47 428 tons in 2021, trended downward to 39 522 tons by 2024.

Exports aluminium bars, rods and profiles from Sweden

In 2020, Sweden exported 38,591 tonnes of aluminium bars, rods, and profiles, marking a 4.8% increase from the previous year. However, looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, exports actually declined by 7.1%, with an average annual decrease of 2.4%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 36,824 tonnes, while the peak occurred in 2018 with 42,339 tonnes. The most significant drop was observed in 2019, when exports fell by 13.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Sweden's exports of aluminium bars, rods, and profiles in volume terms were widely distributed across various countries. The top three destinations—Norway (15.6% of exports), Germany (13.6%), and Denmark (12.1%)—collectively accounted for just 41.2% of total exports. Sweden's exports of aluminium bars, rods, and profiles in value terms declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports totaled $206.8 million US, down 3.3% from 2019. Over the four-year span from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 9.5%, with an average annual decline of 3.3%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at $249.9 million US. The largest decrease occurred in 2019, with a 14.4% drop, while the biggest increase was in 2018, rising by 9.4%.

After two years of growth, Sweden's imports of aluminium bars, rods, and profiles in volume terms declined. In 2020, import volume reached 43,356 tonnes, showing a modest 3.9% decrease compared to the previous year. The peak import volume was recorded in 2019 at 45,097 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 3.2%.

Sweden's imports of aluminium bars, rods, and profiles in value terms fell for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to $171.7 million US, a 6.8% drop from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 4.8%, with an average annual decline of 1.6%. The highest import value was in 2018 at $193.3 million US, which also experienced the largest increase of 7.2%.
