In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted fresh exports to China, prompting a strategic shift toward processed products and slightly reducing the market size to 428 thousand tonnes as import volumes dipped. However, the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) helped diversify exports to European markets.

Market volume continued to grow, reaching 436 thousand tonnes in 2018. A sharp jump in imports propelled the market to a peak of 519 thousand tonnes in 2022, coinciding with strengthened phytosanitary and food safety regulations that opened new export destinations like the United States, South Korea, and Japan. Improved cold-chain logistics facilitated larger import flows. In 2023, the market contracted to 479 thousand tonnes as imports normalized, though export growth to China resumed after the post-pandemic reopening, supported by stronger year-end holiday demand in international markets.

In 2024, import volumes soared to 597 thousand tonnes, while exports reached 31 thousand tonnes. This surge followed the signing of a bilateral protocol with China in August 2024 that licenses exports of frozen durian and fresh coconut, spurring cross-border trade activity. Unfavorable weather conditions also affected domestic harvests, increasing reliance on imported supplies to meet steady demand.

Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 40.6%, averaging 12.0% per year. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 5 781 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 1.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States, Laos, and Asia (not elsewhere specified) were the key export destinations for alliaceous vegetables from Vietnam. The United States accounted for 22.3% of exports in volume, Laos for 18.5%, and Asia (not elsewhere specified) for 12.7%. Together, these three markets made up 53.4% of total export flows.

However, over the 2017-2020 period, export value decreased by 5.4%, with an average annual decline of 1.8%. The lowest value was in 2018 at 4 724 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest drop of 37.9%.
