Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2019, production of alliaceous vegetables in Venezuela increased from 223.3 thousand tons to 242.8 thousand tons. This growth was supported by the government's enhanced role in regulating and importing agricultural inputs like seeds and agrochemicals, which bolstered domestic growers. Concurrent initiatives promoting urban gardening and sustainable agriculture expanded the land area dedicated to fresh vegetable cultivation.
Production continued to rise, reaching 266.0 thousand tons by 2021, even amid persistent economic challenges such as hyperinflation and post-harvest storage issues. State intervention in foreign trade for agri-food goods ensured stable access to imported resources necessary for output. The introduction of new labeling rules in 2022 for products high in sugar and fats raised consumer awareness about healthy eating, potentially stimulating demand for fresh vegetables.
By 2023, output climbed to 281.1 thousand tons, aided by the National Agricultural Plan which focused on achieving food sovereignty and positioning Venezuela as a food exporter. Simultaneously, a growing consumer preference for healthy diets and local produce strengthened domestic demand, supporting further market expansion.
