Exports alliaceous vegetables from SADC

Exports in kind, K t

Export volumes have shown significant fluctuations, pointing to a volatile market. In 2018, exports hit their lowest point at 19.3 thousand tonnes, representing a sharp 76.9% drop from the previous year. However, they rebounded strongly in 2019 with a 34.8% increase. By 2020, exports reached 30.1 thousand tonnes, up 15.9% from 2019. The peak was in 2017, with exports 4.3 times higher than the 2018 trough.

From 2017 to 2020, export destinations for alliaceous vegetables were highly diversified. Uganda accounted for 6.5% of exports, Kenya for 1.2%, and Congo for 1.0%, together making up just 8.7% of total flows. The remaining 91.3% came from a wide range of smaller markets.

After increasing for two years, the value of alliaceous vegetable exports from SADC declined. In 2019, exports peaked at 40 434 thousand US dollars, following a 5.4% rise in 2018. However, in 2020, exports fell to 35 746 thousand US dollars, a significant 11.6% drop from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value decreased by 6.5%, with an average annual decline of 2.2%.

Between 2017 and 2020, no single market dominated SADC's alliaceous vegetable exports in value terms. Uganda contributed 2.7%, the Netherlands 2.3%, and the United Kingdom 1.5%, together accounting for only 6.5% of total export value. SADC's imports of alliaceous vegetables surged in 2020, reaching 141.9 thousand tonnes—a sharp 49.8% increase from the previous year. In 2018, imports peaked at 172.0 thousand tonnes, but then fell by 44.9% in 2019 to 94.7 thousand tonnes, the lowest point in the period. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, import volume grew by 21.3%, equivalent to an average annual rate of 6.6%.

During 2017-2020, imports of alliaceous vegetables to SADC were relatively evenly distributed among suppliers. China led with 16.9% of imports, followed by the Netherlands at 15.5% and India at 12.8%.
