The market for fresh or chilled alliaceous vegetables in Ghana expanded from 215.6 thousand tons in 2018 to a peak of 242.8 thousand tons in 2020, driven by rising imports which increased from 69.7 to 94.2 thousand tons over the same period. Domestic production grew modestly from 146.0 to 148.8 thousand tons.

After stabilizing at 242.5 thousand tons in 2021, the market volume contracted sharply to 172.5 thousand tons in 2022, primarily due to a steep drop in imports from 96.0 to 26.4 thousand tons. Production remained steady at around 148 thousand tons, while exports began to rise from a low base.

In 2023, the market volume recovered slightly to 174.6 thousand tons. For 2024, urea fertilizer prices more than doubled in sub-Saharan ports, including Ghana, leading farmers to under-apply fertilizer and reduce yields by up to 12%, which impacted fresh vegetable production.

The export market for alliaceous vegetables in Ghana experienced significant fluctuations during this period. Exports reached their lowest point in 2018 at 72 t, then surged to a peak of 560 t in 2019, representing a 7.8-fold increase. In 2020, exports dropped sharply to 183 t, a 67.3% decrease from the previous year. The largest decline occurred in 2018 at 76.1%, while the largest increase was recorded in 2019 at 680.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Côte d'Ivoire was the dominant partner for Ghana's exports in kind, accounting for 72.5% of total flows. Other markets played a less significant role during this period.

The export market in value terms showed considerable volatility. The lowest level was recorded in 2018 at 28 K $ US, while the peak occurred in 2020 at 444 K $ US, representing a 16-fold difference. In 2020, exports increased by 273.7% year-over-year. The largest decline was in 2018 at 45.0%, while the largest increase occurred in 2019 at 329.3%.
