Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, the Russian market for agricultural self-loading trailers expanded significantly, reaching over 2,600 units at its peak. Initial growth was supported by increased utilization and regional distribution of production capacities for tractor trailers. Despite the turbulence caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, demand recovered in the summer and autumn as consumption of construction materials rebounded, indirectly boosting trailer demand. The surge in 2021 was directly fueled by a peak in residential construction, with housing starts up 25%, and sustained stable demand for agricultural machinery, including trailers.

The market corrected downward in 2022 and 2023, influenced by sanctions and logistical realignments following February 2022, which complicated component supplies for agricultural machinery manufacturing. Although domestic agricultural machinery production grew by 15.1% in 2022, market volume fell to 2,050 units. The decline continued in 2023, with a 13.5% drop in trailer output, while semi-trailer sales grew separately. Market leadership consolidated around companies like TONAR and GRUNWALD. Recovery emerged in 2024 as production of trailers and semi-trailers rose by 18.8%, driven by renewed demand from agricultural and transport enterprises, modernization of production facilities, and a shift in consumer preferences toward tented and flatbed semi-trailers, which saw sales increase by 42.1%.

The market entered a sharp downturn in 2025, with reported sales of cargo trailers and semi-trailers falling 58% in the first nine months, following the 2024 recovery. This contraction was linked to economic and market factors, while the trailer fleet continued to face structural challenges with a high share of obsolete equipment, as 45.6% of units were over 20 years old.
