July imports rise to $107,900

The United States imported $107,900 worth of Russian ice cream in July, the highest monthly value recorded since spring 2022. Infox reported the figure using US customs information analyzed by RIA Novosti. The increase marks a rebound in a small food trade flow that had contracted sharply after reaching a much higher level in April 2022.

In value terms, July shipments increased 42% from the previous month. They were also 2.4 times the level recorded in the same month of the previous year. The two comparisons indicate that the recovery was not limited to a single weak base month, although the available figures cover trade value rather than shipment volume and therefore do not show how much of the change came from quantities, product mix or prices.

Trade remains well below the 2022 peak

July produced the strongest result since April 2022, when US imports of Russian ice cream were valued at $1.5 million. The flow then dropped to $74,000 in May 2022. Against that benchmark, the latest monthly total remains modest: July’s $107,900 was only a small fraction of the April 2022 figure, despite its strong monthly and annual growth rates.

This gap is important for producers and distributors assessing the commercial significance of the rebound. The data show that Russian ice cream has regained some ground in the US market, but they do not yet demonstrate a return to the scale seen in early 2022. A few additional shipments or changes in order timing can also generate large percentage movements when the underlying trade value is relatively low.

Distribution and product positioning remain decisive

Infox cited changing consumer preferences and more active promotion of Russian brands as possible factors behind the increase. Interest in distinctive flavors and ingredients may also support demand. At the same time, the US ice cream market is highly competitive, requiring foreign suppliers to respond to local tastes as well as demand for natural ingredients and more environmentally responsible packaging.

The next test will be whether suppliers can turn the July increase into a sustained sequence of shipments. Stable distribution channels and products adapted to local market expectations would give Russian manufacturers a better chance of maintaining sales. For importers and retailers, the figures point to renewed activity in a niche category, rather than a broad restoration of the trade levels recorded in April 2022. Further customs data will be needed to establish whether July represented continuing growth or a temporary concentration of orders.
