Commerce Ministry widens market campaign

Thailand’s Commerce Ministry is stepping up efforts to expand international demand for Thai cassava products, with a particular focus on tapioca pellets. The campaign targets Japan, China, Germany, the United States and markets across the Middle East, combining established Asian demand centres with additional opportunities in Western and regional markets.

The ministry is aiming for 30% growth in tapioca pellet sales. It expects the wider promotion programme to generate more than 2 billion baht in orders. These targets give producers, processors and traders a concrete benchmark for assessing whether the campaign can convert buyer interest into additional commercial volumes.

Pellets lead the growth target

Tapioca pellets occupy the central position in the initiative. By setting a specific 30% growth objective for this product category, the government is directing attention toward processed cassava rather than limiting the campaign to the crop in its unprocessed form. The outcome will matter to pellet manufacturers as well as companies involved in sourcing, processing and overseas sales.

The selection of several target regions also spreads the commercial effort across buyers with different requirements. Japan and China represent the campaign’s Asian focus, while Germany and the United States extend its reach into major Western markets. The Middle East adds a broader regional component rather than a single-country target.

Slower first-half exports raise the stakes

The campaign comes after Thailand’s overall cassava exports slowed during the first half of the year. No volume, value or year-on-year comparison was provided for that decline, making it impossible to determine from the available information whether the slowdown was concentrated in one product or destination. The weaker pace nevertheless provides the immediate backdrop to the government’s push.

Against that setting, the expected order value of more than 2 billion baht will be an important measure of near-term buyer response. Orders do not automatically translate into completed exports, but they can provide processors and traders with an indication of purchasing interest across the selected markets. The eventual mix of destinations will also show whether the campaign is reinforcing existing channels or opening additional ones.

Execution will determine market impact

For Thai cassava businesses, the key question is whether promotional activity produces sustained contracts rather than a temporary increase in enquiries. Achieving 30% growth in pellet sales would require participating suppliers to turn the campaign’s international reach into actual transactions while meeting the requirements of buyers in five distinct geographic markets.

The initiative places Thailand’s public trade apparatus behind a defined product and a diversified group of destinations at a time of slower export momentum. Producers will watch for stronger demand reaching the farm and processing levels, while exporters will focus on confirmed orders, shipment execution and repeat purchases. Those indicators will determine whether the campaign changes the direction of the market beyond its initial order forecast.
