Thailand opens nationwide discounted egg sales after farm-gate price rises to 4.00 baht

Thailand's Department of Internal Trade is opening discounted egg sales points across the country from 13 to 31 August 2026, with a target of distributing 3.42 million eggs at prices roughly 10% below the open market. The programme, branded “Thai Eggs Help Thais”, is a direct response to a farm-gate price increase announced by the country's network of egg layer cooperatives.

Wittayakorn Maneenet, Director-General of the Department of Internal Trade, said the cooperative network raised the mixed-grade farm-gate egg price from 3.80 baht to 4.00 baht per egg, an increase of 20 satang, effective 7 August 2026. The change was reported by Post Today and The Bangkok Insight.

Sales points in 76 provinces plus Bangkok

The department has instructed provincial commerce offices to set up sales points covering 76 provinces. In Bangkok, the eggs will be distributed through Thong Fah community events rather than dedicated outlets. Both channels will sell at about 10% below prevailing retail prices, and the department has framed the exercise as adding a purchasing option for consumers rather than as an intervention in the wholesale market.

Thong Fah points will also carry other essential consumer goods at reduced prices, including milled rice and vegetable oil. That bundling matters for retailers competing for the same basket, since the campaign runs for 19 consecutive days.

Output about 3% below normal, no shortage declared

According to figures released by the department, Thailand had approximately 53.85 million layer hens in cages as of August 2026, with expected output of about 43.35 million eggs per day. That is roughly 3% below the standard level, leaving fewer eggs in the system than in a normal month and feeding through to prices at every trading level.

“Eggs are still sufficient for consumption, only the volume of output has fallen from normal levels,” Wittayakorn said, adding that the department was expanding sales channels under the programme to help consumers during the price increase while monitoring volumes and prices at every stage of trade.

Supply talks and price enforcement

The Department of Internal Trade said it has approached the Department of Livestock Development to discuss ways of bringing more eggs into the system, and will continue to track production and distribution so that supply matches consumption demand and prices at each trading level remain consistent with costs and market conditions.

Traders selling at unreasonably high prices can be reported to the department's 1569 hotline. Offences fall under Section 29 of the Prices of Goods and Services Act B.E. 2542, which carries a fine of up to 140,000 baht, imprisonment of up to seven years, or both.
