Russia is preparing a national standard that will establish uniform methods for detecting Staphylococcus aureus in animal feed. The Federal Centre for Animal Health, known by its Russian abbreviation FGBI ARRIAH, developed the draft, which has passed an internal review, Pravda.ru reported. Its requirements will apply to all organizations conducting laboratory quality control of feed once the document is formally approved and entered in the national register.
The measure is not yet compulsory. The document currently remains a draft, and pilot trials are planned at several production sites in the coming months. Regulators will use the trials to assess the methods, collect comments and determine whether adjustments are needed. Until the standard is published in the register, its application remains voluntary.
Laboratories face broader compliance requirements
The proposal covers more than the analytical procedure itself. It sets rules for collecting and preparing samples, interpreting test results and regularly training laboratory personnel. These provisions are intended to address differences among existing testing methods, which have produced inconsistent results and complicated consolidated monitoring of feed safety.
For feed producers and independent laboratories, the transition could require changes to internal protocols, staff training and quality-control procedures. The source material does not provide an estimate of implementation costs or identify the equipment that laboratories may need. The timing of any compulsory compliance period is also unresolved. Animal-care regulation specialist Andrei Nesterov said the standard must complete the prescribed registration procedure and could include a transition period allowing laboratories to adapt to the unified methods.

Staphylococcus aureus is described as one of the most widespread pathogens affecting livestock. It can cause mastitis, sepsis and foodborne intoxication. Detecting the bacterium in feed can help farms prevent infection among animals and reduce the risk of toxins entering the food chain. The standard therefore has implications beyond feed manufacturing, particularly for livestock farms, veterinary services and processors that depend on effective biosecurity controls.
According to FGBI ARRIAH data cited by Pravda.ru, preliminary use of the proposed approaches at a number of enterprises produced a 20% decline in the level of pathogen detection compared with previous periods. The figures came from testing conducted before the standard’s official introduction, however, and the source did not disclose the number of participating plants, the observation period or the baseline detection rate. The result should therefore be viewed as an early trial finding rather than a nationwide measure of feed contamination.
Mandatory status depends on formal approval
After the pilots are completed and feedback is considered, the draft is expected to be formally approved and added to the register of national standards. Only then will its provisions become binding on every organization that performs laboratory feed control. The distinction is significant for market participants: laboratories can begin assessing their procedures now, but the final technical requirements and implementation timetable may still change.
