Russia’s National Mercantile Exchange Launches Soybean Meal Auctions
Russia’s National Mercantile Exchange has opened commodity auctions for toasted feed-grade soybean meal, with Sodrugestvo Trading House acting as seller. The standardized mechanism could give feed producers a clearer price reference and make procurement terms more transparent.
Exchange adds soybean meal to auction platform
Russia’s National Mercantile Exchange, known by its Russian abbreviation NTB, launched commodity auctions for toasted feed-grade soybean meal on August 26, Interfax reported. Sodrugestvo Trading House is the seller. The product has undergone additional moisture and heat treatment, a processing stage used to prepare soybean meal for animal-feed applications.
The launch brings a major feed ingredient onto a standardized trading venue. Soybean meal is used as a protein component in livestock and poultry rations, so the auction results may be relevant to feed manufacturers, integrated meat producers and other large agricultural buyers. Publicly organized sales can provide market participants with an additional reference for comparing prices and procurement conditions, although Interfax did not disclose auction volumes, starting prices, delivery locations or contract terms.
Sodrugestvo brings significant domestic market presence
Sodrugestvo is one of Russia’s largest oilseed processors and the leading seller of soybean meal on the domestic market, according to Interfax. Its participation gives the new auction product a seller with substantial processing and commercial operations. The company is also a major buyer of sunflower seed, rapeseed and soybeans through exchange trading.
The trading house is a strategic partner of NTB in developing exchange-based trade in oilseeds. That relationship connects procurement of raw oilseeds with the sale of a processed feed product on the same broader market infrastructure. For processors, such mechanisms can make bids and transaction terms easier to compare. For buyers, repeated auctions could create a more visible indication of available supply and seller expectations, provided that trading becomes regular and attracts sufficient participation.
NTB expands a system introduced with wheat
NTB introduced commodity auctions in August 2021, initially for wheat. The range later expanded substantially, including the addition of livestock products. The exchange also organizes spot trading in sugar, meat, dairy products and other commodities, calculates grain-market indices and registers over-the-counter commodity contracts.
The exchange was established in July 2002 and is authorized by Russia’s Ministry of Agriculture to conduct state interventions in agricultural commodities, raw materials and food. Adding toasted soybean meal extends this infrastructure further into the processed oilseed and animal-feed chain. The immediate market effect will depend on the frequency and scale of the auctions, information that has not yet been reported. If the sales generate repeat transactions, they could provide feed-sector participants with a more consistent domestic benchmark while giving Sodrugestvo another channel for placing soybean meal in the Russian market.
