Philippines approves sanitary certificates for Colombian beef and pork

The Philippines has approved the sanitary certificates required for imports of Colombian beef and pork, granting both categories admissibility to a market of more than 115 million consumers. Over the past four years the country bought close to 750,000 tonnes of these products worldwide for about US$2.2 billion, according to UN Comtrade data cited by El Nuevo Siglo. Colombia's current meat exports remain small: 674 tonnes of beef and pork in the first seven months of 2026.

Philippines approves sanitary certificates for Colombian beef and pork

The Philippines has approved the sanitary certificates required for imports of Colombian beef and pork, giving both product categories formal admissibility to the Southeast Asian market. Over the past four years the Philippines purchased close to 750,000 tonnes of beef and pork from the world market, worth approximately US$2.2 billion, according to United Nations Comtrade data cited by El Nuevo Siglo.

The approval forms part of Colombia's foreign trade strategy to widen the destination markets of the national export basket, defend the country's commercial interests and create new openings for Colombian companies. The Philippine market adds to the destinations that already receive Colombian meat.

A market of more than 115 million consumers

The Ministry of Agriculture framed the decision as good news for cattle ranchers and hog producers, pointing to an Asian market that concentrates more than 115 million consumers. The Comtrade figures cited by El Nuevo Siglo imply average Philippine purchases of roughly 187,500 tonnes a year over the four-year period, at an average value close to US$550 million annually.

Admissibility means Philippine authorities have accepted the health certification terms under which Colombian product may enter. It does not commit volume by itself: actual shipments depend on commercial agreements between Colombian plants and Philippine importers, and on the establishment-level approvals that normally follow a country opening.

Colombia's export base remains small

Colombian meat export flows are modest in absolute terms. During the first seven months of 2026 Colombia exported 199.9 tonnes of pork worth US$583,159, with Venezuela as the sole destination. Beef exports over the same period reached 474.1 tonnes for US$3.3 million, distributed across several markets:

  • Algeria
  • Chile
  • Lebanon
  • El Salvador
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Curaçao
  • Venezuela

Combined, that is 674 tonnes of beef and pork shipped in seven months. The implied unit values differ sharply between the two categories: close to US$2,900 per tonne for pork and near US$7,000 per tonne for beef, consistent with a beef export mix weighted toward higher-value cuts and a pork trade concentrated in a single neighbouring market.

From permit to shipment

Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Mauricio Gómez Amín said: "This is a national result that we celebrate and that is the fruit of coordinated work between the public and private sectors. It represents an important step for the diversification of Colombia's exportable supply and the opening of new commercial opportunities in Asia." The ministry presented the opening as the product of joint public and private sector work.

For Colombian processors, the operational agenda now shifts to plant certification, cold chain logistics on a Pacific route that is new for the sector, and price competitiveness against suppliers already established on Philippine shelves. For importers in Manila, the approval adds a further origin to the sourcing options for a protein market that has relied on imports for a substantial share of consumption. El Nuevo Siglo reported that the opening strengthens the presence of Colombian supply abroad and creates growth opportunities for companies, producers and workers in Asia.
