Moldova sets wheat export record and becomes the EU's second-largest external supplier

Moldova exported 378,200 tonnes of wheat in July and August 2026, the largest volume ever recorded for that two-month window and 23% above the same period of 2025. Deliveries to EU member states reached 113,500 tonnes, ahead of Serbia and Ukraine, while rail loadings near Reni collapsed and the Giurgiulesti terminal handled almost three-quarters of the flow.

Moldova sets wheat export record and becomes the EU's second-largest external supplier

Moldova opened the 2026/27 marketing year with the largest two-month wheat export volume in its history and moved into second place among the European Union's external wheat suppliers, the Greek agricultural outlet agrocapital.gr reported.

Record start to the 2026/27 season

The country exported 378,200 tonnes of wheat in July and August 2026, the highest figure ever recorded for that two-month window. Shipments were 23% above the same period of 2025 and around 5% above the previous record, set in 2021.

The result reflects both a large exportable surplus and firm demand from nearby milling markets. Moldova's wheat trade is heavily front-loaded, with the bulk of the crop leaving the country in the months immediately after the summer harvest, which makes July-August volumes an early indicator of the full-season programme.

Destinations and the EU ranking

Deliveries to EU member states totalled 113,500 tonnes over the two months, ahead of the volumes sourced from Serbia and Ukraine, according to Eurostat figures cited in the report. Romania was by far the leading single destination.

  • Romania: 134,100 tonnes, or 35.5% of total Moldovan wheat exports
  • Italy: 98,600 tonnes
  • Israel: 56,700 tonnes

The two datasets are not directly comparable. The Eurostat series records wheat arriving in the European Union, while the destination breakdown comes from Moldovan export data, and the Romanian total on its own exceeds the reported EU aggregate. Buyers tracking sourcing shifts should treat the supplier ranking and the destination volumes as separate measurements.

Israel's 56,700 tonnes show that Moldovan wheat also competes outside the bloc. Within the EU, Romania and Italy together absorbed 232,700 tonnes, or 61.5% of everything Moldova shipped in the two months.

Prices lift export value

The average export price of Moldovan wheat over the first two months of the season was 3.71 lei per kilogram, against 3.53 lei per kilogram in 2024/25. The monthly trend was softer, with August at 3.67 lei per kilogram after 3.76 lei per kilogram in July. Combined volume and price gains took the value of July-August wheat exports to about 1.4 billion lei, compared with 1.09 billion lei a year earlier, an increase of roughly 28%.

Rail falters, Giurgiulesti carries the season

Logistics were the main constraint. Rail shipments fell to 2,870 tonnes in August from 45,300 tonnes in July because of delays in wagon availability near the port of Reni, according to agrocapital.gr.

Waterborne shipments absorbed the shortfall and accounted for 76.1% of total dispatches over the two months. The Giurgiulesti terminal handled almost 279,000 tonnes, or 73.8% of the country's wheat exports, leaving close to three-quarters of the trade dependent on a single Danube outlet.

For EU importers, the question is whether the pace holds. The August price dip and the collapse in rail loadings both point to a market where logistics rather than supply set the ceiling on monthly volumes. Moldova's standing among the bloc's suppliers will depend on wagon availability at Reni and on throughput at Giurgiulesti through the rest of the marketing year.
