Indian rice exports to 26 priority markets exceed three-year average

India exported 4.79 million tonnes of rice worth Rs 23,476 crore to 26 priority markets between November 2025 and March 2026. Shipments exceeded the three-year average after the 2025 Bharat International Rice Conference, offering an early test of cuisine-led demand diversification.

Shipments rise above the recent benchmark

India’s rice exports to 26 priority markets exceeded their three-year average during the five months following the 2025 Bharat International Rice Conference, according to an analysis reported by ET CFO. The result provides an initial indication that exporters may be widening demand by presenting Indian rice varieties according to the dishes and culinary preferences of individual markets.

Exports to the 26-market group reached 4.79 million tonnes between November 2025 and March 2026. Their value totalled Rs 23,476 crore. The analysis, prepared by the Indian Rice Exporters Federation, used Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics data covering both Basmati and non-Basmati rice.

The comparison with a three-year average is important because it places the five-month performance against a recent trading benchmark rather than a single earlier period. However, the available figures do not provide a market-by-market breakdown or separate the contribution of Basmati from non-Basmati rice. They therefore show the overall direction of shipments but not which varieties or destinations generated most of the increase.

Cuisine-led marketing broadens the sales pitch

The diversification strategy links particular Indian rice varieties with local cuisines instead of promoting rice as a uniform commodity. For exporters, this can create a clearer commercial proposition: grain characteristics, preparation methods and final dishes become part of the sales case. The approach could also give overseas buyers more specific reasons to add or expand Indian-origin rice in their product ranges.

BusinessWorld highlighted the United Arab Emirates, Europe and emerging markets as drivers of India’s rice trade growth. These markets differ substantially in consumer preferences, distribution channels and demand for premium or mass-market products. A cuisine-led strategy therefore depends on exporters selecting the appropriate variety and positioning for each destination rather than relying on one offer across all 26 markets.

The inclusion of both Basmati and non-Basmati rice gives the campaign a broad product base. Basmati can serve buyers seeking distinctive aromatic rice, while the non-Basmati category allows exporters to address a wider range of dishes and purchasing requirements. The published aggregate, however, does not establish how the Rs 23,476 crore in sales was divided between those categories.

Durability remains to be tested

The five-month result is an encouraging early signal, but it is not yet evidence of a permanent change in demand. Exporters, processors and traders will need to see whether orders continue beyond the period from November 2025 to March 2026 and whether more of the 26 markets produce repeat purchases.

Future assessments will also require more detailed data. Volumes and values by destination would show whether growth is broadly distributed or concentrated in a few markets. A split between Basmati and non-Basmati rice would help processors judge which varieties need additional capacity, procurement or marketing support.

For now, the figures show that the priority-market basket performed above its recent average, with 4.79 million tonnes generating Rs 23,476 crore. The central commercial question is whether matching rice varieties to local dishes can turn conference-led promotion into recurring demand. Consistent repeat orders, rather than one strong five-month period, will determine whether the diversification strategy produces durable gains for India’s rice industry.
