India's Edible Oil Imports Hit 11-Month High as Festival Stockpiling Lifts Palm and Soybean Purchases

India's total edible oil imports rose 1.5 per cent from July to 1.57 million tonnes in August, the highest in 11 months, according to Solvent Extractors' Association of India data reported by Jagran. Soybean oil arrivals set a single-month record of 628,736 tonnes and palm oil reached a six-month high of 782,761 tonnes, while sunflower oil fell 36 per cent. Refiners are building stocks ahead of the Ganeshotsav-to-Diwali festival period.

India's Edible Oil Imports Hit 11-Month High as Festival Stockpiling Lifts Palm and Soybean Purchases

India's edible oil imports rose to an 11-month high in August as refiners built inventories ahead of the country's main festival season. According to data from the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA), reported by Jagran, total imports increased 1.5 per cent from July to 1.57 million tonnes, or 15.7 lakh tonnes.

The headline increase was modest, but the composition of the purchases changed sharply. Soybean oil arrivals reached a record for a single month, palm oil hit its highest level since February, and sunflower oil fell by more than a third. SEA said refiners have increased storage of edible oils in anticipation of stronger demand in the months ahead. India covers a large part of its edible oil requirement through imports, which makes its monthly arrivals one of the most closely tracked indicators in the global vegetable oil trade.

Palm and soybean oil drive the increase

Palm oil imports rose 7 per cent from July to 782,761 tonnes, the highest since February, according to the SEA figures cited by Jagran. Soybean oil imports jumped 26 per cent to a record 628,736 tonnes. Sunflower oil moved in the opposite direction, dropping 36 per cent to 160,639 tonnes.

  • Palm oil: 782,761 tonnes, up 7 per cent month on month and the highest since February.
  • Soybean oil: 628,736 tonnes, up 26 per cent month on month and a record monthly volume.
  • Sunflower oil: 160,639 tonnes, down 36 per cent month on month.

The three oils together account for essentially the whole of the monthly import total. The contraction in sunflower oil absorbed most of the gains in palm and soybean oil, which is why the overall figure advanced only 1.5 per cent even though two of the three categories posted double-digit growth.

Festival calendar behind the stockbuilding

India's main festivals, including Ganeshotsav, Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali, fall between August and November. Industry participants told media that consumption of sweets, snacks and other food products rises during this period, pulling edible oil use up with it. Refiners therefore began increasing imports in advance in order to have stocks in place before the peak.

A dealer at a Mumbai-based global trading house said refiners had raised purchases of both palm oil and soybean oil to meet the coming festival demand. The pattern is one of front-loading: the oil is bought and stored weeks before it is consumed, so the import statistics lead actual consumption rather than track it.

What it means for exporters and prices

India is the world's largest importer of vegetable oils, so a shift in its monthly buying is transmitted directly to producing countries. Heavier Indian purchases could help major palm oil producers Indonesia and Malaysia draw down their stocks, and give soybean oil exporters such as Argentina an additional outlet. Jagran reported concern that the scale of Indian buying may push palm oil and soybean oil prices higher on the global market.

Experts cited in the report said edible oil imports could remain at elevated levels in the coming months if festive demand holds up. The reverse also applies: because the August volumes reflect stockbuilding rather than immediate consumption, demand after Diwali will determine whether refiners keep buying at this pace or step back once tanks are full. For sunflower oil suppliers, the August data mark a clear loss of share in the Indian basket to palm and soybean oil.
