Hormozgan Forecasts 200,000-Tonne Date Crop, With 20% Bound for Export

Iran’s Hormozgan province expects to produce 200,000 tonnes of dates this season, according to IRNA. About 20% of the crop is intended for international markets, while 50,000 tonnes have already been harvested.

Hormozgan Forecasts 200,000-Tonne Date Crop, With 20% Bound for Export

Harvest reaches 50,000 tonnes

Iran’s southern province of Hormozgan expects its date harvest to reach 200,000 tonnes this season, providing a substantial volume for both domestic consumption and export. IRNA reported the forecast, citing the horticulture director of the provincial Agricultural Jihad Organization.

Growers had harvested 50,000 tonnes from the province’s palm groves since the collection campaign began in mid-June, according to the official. That represents one-quarter of the projected crop and indicates that most of the season’s expected production had yet to enter the market at the time of the report. The forecast concerns high-quality dates, although IRNA’s published summary did not provide a breakdown by variety, producing district or expected yield.

Export plan covers one-fifth of output

Hormozgan plans to send about 20% of its date production to international markets. If the province reaches the forecast of 200,000 tonnes and the stated share is applied to the full crop, the export allocation would be roughly 40,000 tonnes. The remaining 80%, equivalent to about 160,000 tonnes on the same basis, would be available for Iran’s domestic market. These figures are calculations derived from the production forecast and export share rather than separate volume estimates published by IRNA.

The planned export proportion makes overseas demand an important outlet without making it the dominant destination for the harvest. Domestic buyers will still absorb the majority of production, so the pace of local sales, storage and processing will remain central to price formation. Exporters, meanwhile, will need to secure buyers and handle grading, packing and shipment for a sizeable but clearly defined part of the crop.

Market implications depend on execution

The 50,000 tonnes already collected gives processors and traders an initial supply base, but the gap between harvested volume and the 200,000-tonne forecast remains large. Reaching the projection will depend on the completion of harvesting across the province. The source material did not provide farm-gate prices, export values, destination countries or comparisons with the previous season, limiting any assessment of revenue or year-on-year growth.

For producers, the division between domestic and foreign channels will influence quality selection and marketing decisions as more fruit becomes available. Export-grade lots must compete for overseas orders, while the much larger domestic allocation must move through Iranian wholesale, retail and processing channels. The central test is therefore not only whether Hormozgan harvests 200,000 tonnes, but whether the province can place approximately one-fifth of that supply abroad without creating pressure in the home market.
