Grapes, onions and wine broaden Nashik’s agricultural export base

Fresh grapes remain the backbone of Nashik’s export economy, supported by recognized pack-houses, cold-chain capacity and cargo infrastructure. Onions, pomegranates, wine and other agricultural products are broadening the district’s export portfolio, although policy changes and compliance requirements remain significant constraints.

Grapes, onions and wine broaden Nashik’s agricultural export base

Fresh grapes anchor the export economy

Nashik district continued to strengthen its position in international agricultural markets in 2026, with fresh grapes at the center of its export economy. The Free Press Journal reports that vineyards in Niphad, Dindori, Sinnar, Yeola and neighboring areas form an important part of the supply chain. Onions, pomegranates, wine, other fruits and vegetables are also contributing to a broader export base.

APEDA data cited by the Free Press Journal show that India exported 224,401.27 metric tonnes of fresh grapes worth $367.99 million during 2025-26. The Netherlands, Russia, the UK, the UAE and Bangladesh were among the leading destinations. The figures cover India as a whole rather than Nashik alone, but the district’s concentration of vineyards and export facilities gives it a major role in the national trade.

Access to these markets depends on more than production volumes. Export-oriented vineyards must comply with international residue limits, traceability rules and quality-testing requirements. Grapes must also pass through modern pack-houses capable of grading, packing and maintaining appropriate temperatures. These requirements determine whether farmers and exporters can supply demanding overseas customers and protect the value of a highly perishable crop.

Pack-houses and cargo facilities support perishables

Several APEDA-recognized pack-houses operate around Niphad, Dindori, Pimpalgaon, Vani and Sinnar. According to the Free Press Journal, the facilities handle grapes, pomegranates, vegetables and other fruits for export. Their expansion is improving post-harvest handling, grading, packaging and cold-chain management, while also giving exporters scope to diversify beyond grapes.

The HALCON Air & Sea Cargo Complex at Ozar Airport is another part of Nashik’s export infrastructure. It can handle grapes, pomegranates, mangoes and other fruits and vegetables. Faster air-cargo connections are particularly relevant for products with short commercial lives because they can reduce the time required to reach overseas markets. The commercial benefit, however, depends on reliable connectivity and coordination among growers, pack-houses, freight operators and buyers.

Onions and wine widen the product mix

Onions remain another major component of Nashik’s agricultural economy, with Lasalgaon serving as one of India’s best-known wholesale onion markets. This trade is more exposed to government intervention than the grape business. Export restrictions, changes in duties, domestic prices and international demand can directly affect farmers, traders and exporters, making access to foreign markets less predictable.

Nashik has also emerged as one of India’s leading wine-producing regions. Nashik Valley Wine is included in the central government’s Districts as Export Hubs initiative, highlighting the district’s potential in value-added agriculture. Wine provides an additional route to market for grapes and supports wineries, packaging suppliers, transport companies, tourism operators and related businesses.

Pomegranates, other fruits, vegetables and processed agricultural goods add further diversity. Nashik is therefore developing from a production center into a more integrated export hub, according to the Free Press Journal. Grapes remain its strongest pillar, but recognized pack-houses, cold-chain facilities and the Ozar cargo complex allow more products to enter export channels. Further progress will depend on compliance with overseas standards, dependable logistics and consistent access to destination markets.
