Ghana white maize prices rise 8.9% in August despite better supply, AGRA reports

The average price of white maize in Ghana rose 8.9 per cent in August to GH¢3,141 per metric tonne, according to AGRA's latest Food Security Monitor reported by the Ghanaian Times. Prices remain 8.9 per cent below February and 36.3 per cent below a year ago. GhanaWeb reported that the wider food basket was largely stable, with fuel the other notable increase.

Ghana white maize prices rise 8.9% in August despite better supply, AGRA reports

The average price of white maize in Ghana rose 8.9 per cent in August to GH¢3,141 per metric tonne, according to the latest Food Security Monitor from the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), reported by the Ghanaian Times.

The move stands out because the rest of the basket did not follow it. GhanaWeb reported that food prices in Ghana remained largely stable in August 2026 compared with the previous month, with white maize and fuel the two clear exceptions in the AGRA data.

Three timeframes, three different signals

The monitor sets the August increase against longer comparisons. White maize was 8.9 per cent cheaper than six months earlier and 36.3 per cent below the level recorded a year ago, the Ghanaian Times reported. The same commodity is therefore rising on a monthly view while still falling on both the half-year and the annual view.

AGRA said the figures suggested that overall maize supply conditions remained more favourable than they were a year earlier, although the market had tightened in recent months. For buyers the distinction is practical. The annual comparison describes the supply position carried into this season, while the monthly move describes what traders are being asked to pay for grain that is available now.

The three readings also imply a lower point earlier in the year. With August 8.9 per cent under the February level and 8.9 per cent above July, July prices sat clearly below where February left them, and a single month has reversed a large share of the decline accumulated since the start of the year.

Fuel is the second cost line moving

Fuel was the other component flagged in the August report, with prices up on the month, according to GhanaWeb's account of the AGRA monitor. Neither the published extract of the report nor the reporting around it put a figure on the size of the fuel increase.

Fuel enters the maize price twice over: in haulage from producing areas to urban wholesale markets, and in milling and distribution once the grain is processed. When transport costs and farmgate values move up together, the pass-through into retail prices and into feed rations for poultry and aquaculture producers is faster than a grain-only increase would suggest.

What better supply does and does not mean

The 36.3 per cent year-on-year fall remains the dominant figure in the report, and it defines the cost base that processors, feed mills and institutional buyers are working from this season. It does not guarantee that the level holds. AGRA's own wording points to a market that has been tightening, and a monthly move of 8.9 per cent is large enough to erode the annual cushion quickly if it repeats. Several indicators will determine whether it does:

  • Whether the August increase extends into September or proves to be a single-month correction after an unusually low July.
  • The direction of fuel prices, which lift transport and milling costs across the whole food basket, not only maize.
  • The gap between the six-month and year-on-year comparisons, the clearest available measure of how quickly the market is tightening.
  • Whether the stability reported across the rest of the food basket in August holds once the maize and fuel increases work through to retail.
