Fonterra raises 2026/27 milk price forecast as dairy powder demand improves

Fonterra raised the midpoint of its 2026/27 farmgate milk price forecast to NZD 9.75 per kilogram of milk solids and narrowed the expected range. Stronger demand for whole and skim milk powder across Asia, the Middle East and Africa supported the revision despite record milk collections.

Dairy powder prices support higher forecast

New Zealand dairy cooperative Fonterra has raised and narrowed its farmgate milk price forecast for the 2026/27 season after demand improved for its principal dairy powder products. The midpoint increased from NZD 9.50 to NZD 9.75 per kilogram of milk solids, while the forecast range moved to NZD 9.00-NZD 10.50 from NZD 8.50-NZD 10.50.

The revision, announced on Friday, October 30, 2026, followed gains at the two latest Global Dairy Trade events. Fonterra said prices for whole milk powder rose by about 5%, while skim milk powder advanced by approximately 7%. These products are important components of New Zealand's export-oriented dairy industry and of returns paid to the cooperative's farmer suppliers.

According to Fonterra, stronger demand came from Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa and China. The geographical spread indicates that the improvement was not confined to one major customer market. Demand from these regions helped the cooperative maintain a well-contracted sales book even as its milk collections reached record levels.

Organic milk outlook rises more sharply

Fonterra also increased its organic milk price forecast. The midpoint rose from NZD 14.30 to NZD 15.25 per kilogram of milk solids. The new range is NZD 14.50-NZD 16.00, compared with the previous NZD 13.30-NZD 15.30 range.

The organic forecast therefore carries a substantial premium over the standard farmgate milk price. Higher projected payments can strengthen revenue expectations for participating farmers, although actual returns will depend on the final seasonal price and the volume and composition of milk supplied.

For processors and exporters, the higher farmgate forecast also points to increased raw-material costs. The effect on margins will depend on whether improved powder prices and contracted sales are sufficient to offset those payments, alongside currency movements and changes in the product mix.

Supply and currency remain key risks

Fonterra cautioned that global supply and demand conditions could still change the outlook. Record milk collections provide more product for sale but can also add pressure if demand or international dairy prices weaken. The cooperative's exposure extends beyond commodity prices to production volumes, exchange rates and purchasing conditions in its main export markets.

The higher forecast improves the earnings environment for Fonterra's farmer suppliers and provides a stronger operating backdrop for units in the Fonterra Shareholders' Fund. Ad-hoc-news.de noted, however, that the announcement alone does not establish a market-price reaction for the fund units.

Fonterra has kept its FY27 earnings guidance at 65 to 85 cents per share, according to information cited from the cooperative's investor page. The unchanged guidance separates the improved outlook for milk payments from the cooperative's current expectations for corporate earnings.

As a farmer-owned cooperative, Fonterra collects milk and sells ingredients, consumer products and foodservice products in New Zealand, Greater China and other global markets. The next direction for dairy powder prices, together with demand from China and other importing regions, will determine whether the stronger farmgate forecast can be sustained through the 2026/27 season.
