Egypt Receives 120,000 Tonnes of Food Imports in One Week

Imports span staple foods and industrial inputs

Egypt received about 120,000 tonnes of imported food between September 26 and October 2, 2026, according to Youlyou, citing the weekly report of the National Food Safety Authority. The volume arrived in 1,544 consignments handled for 765 importing companies.

The shipments included edible oils, wheat, soybeans and fresh apples, as well as other food products. Wheat, soybeans and oils serve both direct consumption and food-processing demand, making the weekly flow relevant to millers, oilseed processors, food manufacturers and wholesale distributors. The report did not provide a breakdown of tonnage or value by individual commodity.

Indonesia leads a diversified supplier base

Indonesia ranked first among the countries supplying food consignments to Egypt during the reporting week. Ukraine was second, followed by the United States, China and India. The ranking was based on the number of consignments received rather than the tonnage or value supplied by each country.

In total, Egypt received food products from about 81 countries. This broad sourcing base reduces dependence on a small group of external markets, although the report did not disclose the share held by each supplier. The mix also reflects Egypt's need to procure both staple commodities and inputs used by domestic food industries from several regions.

Alexandria handles the largest number of consignments

Alexandria was the leading entry port, processing 510 food consignments during the week. Port Said ranked second with 225, while Damietta handled about 212. Together, the three ports accounted for 947 of the 1,544 consignments reported, underlining their central role in the country's food-import logistics and inspection system.

The National Food Safety Authority recorded about 984 temporary releases and 340 expedited releases during the period. It also handled about 86 appeals or cases related to incoming consignments and issued import licences to about 55 importers. Before products can circulate in the domestic market, the authority reviews documentation and conducts the required checks for compliance with health and technical standards.
