FEDEFRUTA names cherries, packing control and water security as Chile's fruit sector challenges

Víctor Catán Dabike, president of Chile's fruit growers' federation FEDEFRUTA, has set out a projection for the coming cherry season and urged producers to tighten packing control, according to latribuna.cl. Water security was named alongside them as a principal challenge for the sector. No volume or value figures were attached to the projection.

Cherries set the tone for the coming campaign

Víctor Catán Dabike, president of the Federación de Productores de Frutas de Chile (FEDEFRUTA F.G.), has identified the coming cherry season, packing control and water security as the defining challenges for the Chilean fruit sector, according to latribuna.cl.

In remarks reported by La Tribuna, Catán set out a projection for the next cherry campaign and recommended that growers apply stricter control over packing. Cherries are Chile's highest-value fresh fruit export and the campaign that concentrates the most commercial and logistical risk, harvested through the Southern Hemisphere summer and landing in Northern Hemisphere markets at the peak of winter demand. The report does not attach volume or value figures to the projection.

The emphasis matters for how the season will be judged. Chilean cherry supply has expanded as successive plantings reach bearing age, and each additional week of harvest arrives in an Asian market where price is set less by scarcity than by the condition of the fruit at the moment the box is opened. Catán's framing puts execution — orchard management, harvest timing, post-harvest handling — ahead of headline tonnage.

Packing control as the quality lever

The recommendation on packing is the most operational point in the federation president's message. Fruit destined for Asia spends weeks in transit under refrigeration, and errors made at the packing line are invisible at loading. Fruit packed above target temperature, inconsistent sizing, soft or split fruit allowed into the carton, and weak pallet integrity all surface only at destination, where they become rejections, condition claims and price discounts.

The cost of those errors is collective rather than individual. A poor lot arriving in a given week weighs on reference prices for every exporter shipping into the same window, because importers price the origin before they price the grower. That is the practical argument for tighter control at farm and packhouse level rather than leaving quality assurance to exporters and receivers further down the chain.

Water security as the long-term constraint

Alongside cherries and packing, Catán placed water security among the sector's principal challenges, La Tribuna reported. Irrigation availability is the binding constraint on fruit growing in Chile's central valleys, where sustained water stress has pushed growers toward deficit irrigation, deeper wells and decisions about which orchards to replant or remove. Unlike annual crops, an orchard cannot be left idle for a dry season without sacrificing future yields, because the capital is already committed to the ground.

What the trade will be watching

For importers, traders and packaging suppliers, the practical signals in the months ahead are condition-on-arrival performance in the first shipments, the packing standards applied at grower level, and water allocation decisions taken before the campaign begins. FEDEFRUTA represents producers rather than exporters, and the fact that its president is raising packing discipline with his own members points to quality variability at origin, not demand, as the risk he considers most controllable.

The report gives no figures for the season projection and no timetable for the measures discussed.
