Azerbaijan targets 30% rise in poultry meat output by 2030
Azerbaijan plans to raise poultry meat production by at least 30% by 2030 as it seeks full self-sufficiency. Output reached 147,000 tonnes in 2025, while imports totaled 32,000 tonnes and domestic supply covered 82% of demand.
Poultry output rises by 27.4% in five years
Azerbaijan is accelerating investment in poultry farming as part of a state-backed effort to strengthen domestic food production. Day.Az reported that the country now fully covers its requirements for breeding and table eggs, while poultry meat production continues to expand.
At a May 25 meeting on agriculture, President Ilham Aliyev said domestic production covers 82% of Azerbaijan's poultry meat requirements. Annual output stands at 147,000 tonnes, compared with imports of 32,000 tonnes. The government wants the country to become fully self-sufficient in poultry meat by 2030.
Official statistics cited by Day.Az show that poultry meat output in slaughter weight increased from 115,400 tonnes in 2020 to 147,000 tonnes in 2025, a rise of 27.4% over five years. The state program for the development of agriculture, fisheries and aquaculture production and processing in 2026–2030 calls for poultry meat production to increase by at least another 30% by 2030. This implies additional output of no less than 44,000 tonnes over the next four years.
Egg production exceeds domestic demand
Egg production rose by 22.7%, from 1.906198 billion units in 2020 to 2.34 billion in 2025. Mürvət Həsənli, head of the Azerbaijan Poultry Meat, Egg Producers and Exporters Association, provided a slightly higher 2025 estimate of 2.3429 billion eggs from household farms and broiler enterprises, up 1.8% from 2024.
Həsənli attributed the industry's growth partly to state support and veterinary controls. He said the Food Safety Agency's monitoring system has helped prevent the import and spread of diseases that could cause mass poultry mortality. According to the association, farms have consequently avoided major livestock losses and production interruptions.
Surplus egg production is already supporting exports. Azerbaijan shipped 12.6868 million breeding eggs and 90.4378 million table eggs last year. Total egg export volume increased by 23% from the previous year and generated $10.6 million in foreign-currency revenue. Poultry products are now exported from Azerbaijan to nearly 10 countries.
New markets create room for investment
Export destinations recorded last year included the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, the United States, Iraq, Gambia, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone and Germany. In January–May 2026, Azerbaijan exported 15.82344 million table eggs worth $1.15731 million to the United Arab Emirates. The association said producers are prioritizing domestic demand this year while continuing overseas sales.
Three agreements between Azerbaijan's Food Safety Agency and China's General Administration of Customs also provide a route for exports of poultry meat, aquaculture fish, caviar and seafood to China. Həsənli said the agreements confirm that Azerbaijani products meet Chinese quality and food-safety requirements. Poultry companies have begun implementing investment plans intended to close the remaining domestic meat-supply gap and eventually begin exports. Achieving the target will require producers to add capacity while maintaining disease controls and ensuring that expansion does not compromise supplies to the domestic market.
