Antigua and Barbuda authorizes imports of Colombian beef, pork and poultry
Antigua and Barbuda has approved sanitary requirements for imports of Colombian beef, pork, poultry and related by-products. The decision completes a bilateral approval process that Colombia’s ICA says began in May 2025.
Sanitary approval covers three meat sectors
Antigua and Barbuda has authorized imports of Colombian beef, pork, poultry and related by-products after approving the sanitary requirements submitted by Colombia. The decision gives Colombian livestock and meat companies access to another Caribbean destination and permits commercial shipments to begin, subject to the approved conditions.
The authorization was granted by Antigua and Barbuda’s Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and the Blue Economy. Llanera.com reported that the approval concluded the dialogue between the two countries’ sanitary authorities. The Colombian Agricultural Institute, known as ICA, presented the development as a step toward strengthening agricultural exports and expanding the international presence of Colombian products.
Approval process began in May 2025
According to ICA, the admissibility process resulted from joint work conducted since May 2025. Participants included ICA, Colombia’s National Institute for Food and Drug Surveillance, known as Invima, industry associations representing the cattle, pork and poultry chains, and other national government bodies.
Colombia supplied technical information intended to demonstrate the strength of its sanitary control system and the quality and food-safety standards applied to meat produced for export. Approval of the requirements completed the technical process between the authorities and established the sanitary basis for Colombian companies to start supplying the Antiguan and Barbudan market.
ICA general manager Paula Cepeda said that obtaining new market approvals strengthens the Colombian economy and supports the development and growth of the agricultural sector. The opening covers several animal-protein categories rather than beef alone, creating potential opportunities for slaughterhouses, meat processors and exporters across the bovine, swine and poultry industries.
Colombia broadens its list of approved destinations
Antigua and Barbuda joins Chile, China, Curaçao, Egypt, El Salvador and Russia among the markets where Colombia already has sanitary admissibility for these types of products, according to Llanera.com. The new authorization does not by itself establish shipment volumes or commercial contracts, but it removes a sanitary market-access barrier and allows suppliers and buyers to pursue sales under the agreed rules.
The opening is particularly relevant to Colombia’s Orinoquía, where cattle production is a major part of the regional economy. Producers and meat companies in Arauca, Casanare, Meta and Vichada could benefit from a wider range of potential destinations. Actual trade will depend on exporters meeting the approved requirements and securing commercially viable relationships with importers.
For Colombian suppliers, the Caribbean authorization adds another outlet to a geographically diverse portfolio of approved markets. It may also help processors spread market-access risk across more destinations. For Antigua and Barbuda’s buyers, the decision introduces an additional eligible origin for beef, pork, poultry and by-products, increasing the range of suppliers that can compete for local demand.
