Earlier Report Observations
Libya's production of wood in the rough saw steady growth from 752 thousand tons in 2018 to 786 thousand tons in 2023, with the total market volume expanding from 758 thousand tons to 789 thousand tons over the same period. This expansion was supported by the import of construction timber, which supplemented domestic supply, and by companies importing logs from African countries for processing at local plants, enhancing production capacity.
Wood imports fluctuated during the period, reaching a low of 0.6 thousand tons in 2021 before recovering to 5.3 thousand tons in 2022 and 2.8 thousand tons in 2023. The market also saw significant volumes of wood shavings being collected and sold, indicating activity in the woodworking sector, alongside changing timber prices that reflected variations in type and quality.
In 2024, imports rose to 7.5 thousand tons, while the Ministry of Trade and Industry opened an investigation into the dumping of laminated wood board imports following complaints from local companies. The launch of an investment package on the stock market and rising fertilizer prices due to supply chain disruptions also influenced related sectors, potentially affecting wood demand.
