Earlier Report Observations

The wood fuel market in Senegal showed gradual growth from 5.6 million m³ in 2018 to 5.6 million m³ in 2021. This expansion occurred despite government policies promoting alternative fuels and improved cookstoves to reduce biomass consumption, as wood fuel remained the primary energy source for up to 80% of Senegalese households. Continuous annual forest loss of 40 000 hectares constrained supply but did not offset the underlying demand from residential energy needs.

A marked acceleration took place in 2022, with market volume jumping by 3.5% to 5.8 million m³, followed by a further increase to 5.9 million m³ in 2023. This surge was directly triggered by sharp rises in electricity, gasoline, and diesel prices, which made wood fuel a more economical alternative for many households, especially in rural areas. The upward trend continued in 2023 after a tariff revision by the national utility Senelec raised electricity prices, reinforcing wood's cost advantage.
