Earlier Report Observations

Wood charcoal market volume in Maldives increased steadily from 1 354.8 metric tons in 2018 to 1 830.6 metric tons in 2020, driven by rising imports. However, in 2021 the market contracted sharply to 1 480.9 metric tons as imports fell by nearly 40% from the previous year. The market then recovered over the next two years, reaching 1 828.1 metric tons in 2023, close to the 2020 peak.

In 2024, charcoal imports dropped to 651.8 metric tons. This decline coincided with the government's strengthened environmental and energy policies, including the Energy Policy and Strategy 2024-2029 which promotes sustainable energy sources, and new waste management regulations that may affect the use of traditional fuels like wood charcoal.
