Earlier Report Observations

The European wheat starch market volume increased from 3 044 thousand tons in 2018 to 3 346 thousand tons in 2019, driven by robust starch industry activity where four major players operated ten production sites in France alone, processing 2.7 million tons of soft wheat annually. In 2020, supply chain disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic were offset by growing consumer preference for natural and gluten-free ingredients, resulting in a slight market adjustment to 3 290 thousand tons.

Rising wheat prices due to extreme weather and geopolitical tensions significantly raised production costs, leading to a market contraction to 3 087 thousand tons in 2021 and 2 844 thousand tons in 2022. The market recovered to 3 065 thousand tons in 2023 as wheat prices stabilized and demand for clean-label, gluten-free starch remained strong in food and industrial applications, supported by capacity expansions like ADM's September 2023 investment.
