Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2023, the market volume for wheat and meslin flour and cereals in Guyana showed considerable variation, reaching a high of 31 422 t in 2020. New quality and sanitary regulations for cereal-based food products, established by Decree No. 2-19-144 in July 2019, introduced specific requirements for wheat flour enrichment, setting a revised framework for product standards.

The market structure began to transform in 2022 with the entry of a new player, BèlNatiProd, which constructed Guyana's first integrated flour mill. This facility, designed to process imported wheat grain and local starches, increased domestic production capacity to 23 250 t and significantly reduced imported flour volumes to 1 275 t that year.

Following these developments, the market volume slightly recovered to 25 263 t in 2023, reflecting an adjusted supply balance with greater local processing activity.
