Supported by strong global nickel output and rising demand for stainless steel and batteries, the German unwrought nickel market stood at 55 521 t in 2018. It then contracted over the next two years, dropping sharply to 43 916 t in 2020 after the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains and dampened industrial activity.

A robust recovery followed, with market volume climbing to 50 955 t in 2021 as global nickel imports surged by 55% and industrial demand rebounded. Growth continued into 2022, reaching 53 648 t, sustained by steady demand for electric vehicle batteries and stable import flows.

By 2024, the market receded to 44 123 t, a level that coincided with a slight dip in worldwide nickel production and persistent price volatility, even as demand from battery and stainless steel makers remained a core market driver.

Production unwrought nickel in Germany
