In value terms, however, the market size continued to grow, reaching 68.8 million USD in 2022, before decreasing to 54.7 million USD in 2023 and 53.8 million USD in 2024. By 2024, production of sulphite wrapping paper in the EU, including Germany, rose by 1.6%, marking the end of a two-year decline. This upturn was supported by growing demand from e-commerce and a shift in consumer preferences toward environmentally friendly packaging materials.

Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 14%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.5%. The highest volume was in 2018 at 27 496 tonnes, and the largest increase of 31.9% also occurred that year.

From 2017 to 2020, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Poland remained the top buyers of uncoated sulphite wrapping paper from Germany, accounting for 28.4%, 11.2%, and 10.5% of exports in kind, respectively. Together, they formed 50.1% of total exports in kind.
