From 2018 to 2022, production of unbleached kraft pulp in MERCOSUR trended upward, rising from 2 145 thousand tons to a peak of 2 274 thousand tons. The market volume followed a similar path, growing from 2 157 thousand tons to 2 264 thousand tons over the same period. This growth was interrupted in 2023 when production contracted to 2 128 thousand tons and market volume fell to 2 106 thousand tons.

A pivotal development in 2023 was the acquisition of the Hinton Pulp Mill by the Mondi Group. This facility, which produces unbleached kraft pulp, was purchased with plans for modernization and the addition of a new kraft paper machine by 2027, representing a major strategic investment by a key industry player. Concurrently, the region began exporting significant volumes, with shipments reaching 25 thousand tons in 2023, while imports dwindled to minimal levels.
